Drug-induced labor introduces longer and more painful contractions and presents many proven risks, including a higher chance of vacuum or forceps delivery, twice the likelihood of Ceasarian section and a considerable risk of uterine rupture.
Natural labor induction by acupuncture and acupressure does not carry these risks and has been proven safe by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Health (NIH), including other reputed research institutions and controlled trials. It can safely be used at term or post dates.
Acupuncture creates a downward-moving flow to the pelvic area and stimulates uterine contractions. It promotes dilation of the cervix, speeds up slow early labor and helps the baby descend. Unlike medical induction, natural induction does not overstimulate the body or cause distress to the baby.
Natural induction with acupuncture also helps relieve the anxiety and fear associated with labor, thereby allowing the mother to intuitively find comfortable positions during labor (see active birthing workshop).
From her concurrent work as a doula, Dr. Sturm is especially aware of the needs of pregnant women and is ready to assist them with a safe and natural labor induction at home births, in her office or in a hospital or birthing center.
